For Newtown — A Quiet Day Of Reflection

Today, on the one-year anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we are seeing events that seek to use this sacred date for political gain, news media attention and fundraising. The people of Newtown, however, are showing us a different way forward — a path that calls for the courage of restraint — that I hope will inspire and guide us all.
Over the past year, I have come to know many Newtown residents. Just weeks after the Dec. 14 massacre, I was asked to help design and lead a process through which the community could decide the future of Sandy Hook Elementary School. On the surface, this seemed to be about a building; but in reality, it was about whether the community could move from trauma and despair to healing and hope.
