National Turmoil: Local Communities Must Lead the Way

This week’s political events unfolding in the nation’s capital are just one more indication of why local communities must lead the way in placing our shared lives on a more hopeful, inclusive path.

We can do better. We must.

No matter where one stands on the impeachment proceedings, the current crisis has further eroded people’s confidence in government and their leaders. The State of the Union last night was fraught with harsh political acrimony. The Democratic presidential contests are likely to get increasingly contentious.

All in all, no matter what happens on our national political scene, we need to create a more hopeful, inclusive society.

That work must begin, take root and grow starting in local communities. It’s there that we can:

  • Turn outward toward one another, see and hear each other, afford dignity to all, and rebuild trust.

  • See ourselves as doers again, where people are co-creators of how we move forward, together.

  • Reclaim our can-do spirit.

  • Focus on what really matters to people.

We can’t afford to wait for Washington, or even our state capitals. We need to restore our belief that we can get things done, together. Much of this work can only happen in local communities.

We must act.

People are responding to this message wherever I go, and we’re taking it to all 50 states through our Stepping Forward Campaign, which is based on my new book, Stepping Forward: A Positive, Practical Path to Transform Our Communities and Our Lives.

Let’s join together to help move people’s lives, communities and the nation forward.
